As every year since 2009 paysages tries to forecast the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature[1]. Difficult as every year, – see also the “Nobel Prize in Literature speculation” of M.A. Orthofer in the Literary saloon. As I wrote it in « Le Cartographe des absences / O Mapeador de Ausências – ou comment découvrir la géographie secrète des paysages de la Baía de Sofala avec le poète Diogo Santiago », Mia Couto seems to be a « nobelisable » and perhaps he has the chance to be awarded with the price in 2023. As Annie Ernaux was awarded with the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2022 it seems very probably, that the price will not be awarded to a francophone author! So I will place Mia Couto at the first place of my permanent list followed by Lyudmila Ulitskaya, António Lobo Antunes, and furthermore Boualem Sansal , Claudio Magris, Adunis, Ismaïl Kadaré , Margaret Atwood, Jamaica Kincaid, Anne Carson, Art Spiegelman, Marjane Satrapi, Don DeLillo ! More or less the same name as in my forecast lists of the last years!

The book has been translated into French under the title “Le Cartographe des absences” by Elisabeth Monteiro Rodrigues, E-ISBN : 979-10-226-1227-2. As far as I know there is currently neither an english nor a german translation of this well worth reading novel by Mia Couto
